A Tour to the Museum of Decorative Arts and the Saint-Ouen Flea Market
Join us for a day immersed in the enchanting world of antiques and unique objects—furniture, tableware, jewelry, and fashion from the Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements.
We will dive into the origins of these iconic styles – from Emile Gallé to René Lalique and Louis Majorelle to Émile Ruhlmann. Discover the prominent figures of the Nancy School and how they differ from the Paris School, why Art Deco eventually replaced Art Nouveau, and the roles of Diaghilev's Ballets and the 1925 World’s Fair in this shift. We will get to know the key figures of the Nancy School and see how they differ from the artists of the Paris School, why Art Deco eventually took over from Art Nouveau, and how Diaghilev’s Ballets and the 1925 World’s Fair played a role in this change.
Not only will we get an up-close look at these antique treasures, but we’ll also have the chance to hold—and maybe even buy—a piece of these iconic styles.
Looking forward to seeing you on our events
The Program
11:00 - 12:30 We’ll begin our exploration of the world of objects with a visit to the Museum of Decorative Arts (Le Musée des Arts Décoratifs), focusing on its exceptional collections of Art Nouveau and Art Deco. Our guide for this journey will be Maria Mytaren, a graduate of the Louvre School, an art historian, and an expert in antiques. After the museum visit, we’ll head to the Saint-Ouen Flea Market in Europe, Europe’s largest and most famous flea market.
13:15 - 14:30 We’ll enjoy a light lunch at one of the charming restaurants in the market. During lunch, Maria will discuss the role of decorative arts, the world of antiques, and the history of this unique neighborhood that houses over 10 markets spread across 7 hectares, home to antique dealers and secondhand sellers.
14:30 - 16:00 Saint-Ouen Flea Market Tou This is a true open-air museum where you can find everything from affordable trinkets to furniture and authentic works of art (if you know where and how to look).
Here, we’ll not only take a closer look at but also have the chance to touch antique and vintage objects, searching for those related to Art Nouveau and Art Deco, applying the knowledge we have gained so far.
Maria will show us how to distinguish originals from fakes, where to find the most interesting pieces and teach us how to haggle with the vendors. She has lived in the world of antiques her entire life and knows many of the dealers at Saint-Ouen, meaning that prices in certain areas can differ significantly from the “official” ones (though, of course, buying something is optional).
We will be guided by Maria Matyreva, who graduated from the Russian State University for the Humanities (RGGU) in 2016 with a degree in Art History and then continued her studies at the École du Louvre for her master's degree.
She leads tours in the largest Parisian museums, including the Centre Pompidou, the Louvre, the Musée d'Orsay, the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, and others. Maria also worked for several years at an Art Deco gallery.
The idea of combining several related professions came naturally to her — as a lecturer and art historian by education, and an antique dealer by vocation, since Maria's family owns an antiques gallery. She is the author of articles about private collections of French glass in Russia.
